I did this farm animal activity with my daycare kids this week and it was a big hit. They enjoyed hearing the sounds, imitating them and playing with the cards. Meanwhile, there was a lot of learning going on!
Not only did they hear real animal sounds, they engaged their senses of hearing and sight. They processed what they heard and related it to the pictures of animals that they saw.
We also had a chance to discuss the characteristics of the animals and their purposes on the farm.
Want to make your own game? Here’s how.
Make Your Own Sound Matching Game
First, print out Farm Animal Bingo Calling Cards 1 and 2. You’ll want a copy for each child you’ll be playing the game with. Cut out the following animal cards:
Next, download the corresponding animal sounds from the Animal Sounds website.
Since I pieced this activity together from what I could find for free, you will end up with some left over cards. If you find free sounds for the remaining animals please let us know in the comments below!
Begin by introducing the animals one by one. Show your children a picture and read the name. Then, play the sound.
Gauge your child’s reaction. Some sounds may seem silly, some may seem unfamiliar or even frightening. Take time to get to know each sound and answer questions about each animal.
Once your children are familiar with the sounds, play a memory game. Encourage your child to lay out all of the animal cards on the table. Play an animal sound at random. Invite your child to hold up the animal that makes the sound you heard. Move through all of the sounds this way.
More Fun (and Learning)
Keep the fun going with these ideas!
- Test your memory by repeating the game the next day.
- Play Memory with two sets of the animals cards. With young children, make it a cooperative game. Celebrate when you’ve found all of the pairs as a group.
- Visit your local library to find books on farm animals. We love the Farm and Farm Animal Books by Gail Gibbons (affiliate link). They are full of factual information and realistic illustrations.
I hope you have fun with your Farm Animal Sound Game! Please share!
