Getting outside and exploring in nature is one of my favorite things to do. Through the years I’ve incorporated that love of nature into activities for my daycare kids. Now, I’m busy thinking up ways to get Baby B into the natural world.
At just shy of 4 months old, Baby B has been on numerous hikes, trips to the beach and even a camping trip! I’m wasting no time and Baby B is loving it.
While he wont remember these first adventures, I am confident that these early experiences are fostering a sense of wonder and love for the natural world. While outdoors, Baby B is learning through his senses and hearing new vocabulary as we talk about what we are experiencing. Best of all, he’s getting quality time with Mom and Dad.
I’ve gotten more than one strange look at the idea of taking a 4-month-old camping and I realize that not everyone is up for that big of an adventure. Luckily, there are plenty of easy nature activities for babies that keep you closer to home.
Nap outdoors. Lay your baby down on a soft blanket to nap out in the fresh air. Maybe you can catch a little nap yourself.
Visit your local zoo or aquarium. We visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Father’s Day. It was really fun to watch Baby B’s reactions to all the sea creatures we encountered.
Listen to the birds. YouTube has a plentiful selection of real bird sounds. Put some on for your baby while you’re hanging out around the house. Baby B has been enjoying this one.
Take a texture walk. I found this idea on teachpreschool.org. Go on a stroll and explore your surroundings. Encourage your baby to touch cool rocks, rough tree bark and soft grass.
Look up. Lay your baby on a blanket so he can gaze up at a tree or clouds rolling by. Join him and talk about what you see.
Take a hike. Hiking is a great way to expose Baby to nature and get some exercise at the same time! We use the ERGObaby Original Baby Carrier (affiliate link) to keep Baby B snug and safe while we explore. It’s comfortable for me and Hubby and provides ergonomic support for Baby B.
Dip your toes in. We visited the beach a few days ago and Baby B put his feet in the sand for the first time. He got quiet, then excited and started bouncing in my arms. Our next adventure will be to find some mud.
