I tried out this art activity with my daycare kids yesterday and it was a big hit! While the set up was very simple, the project stimulated artistic creativity, dramatic play, cooperation and sensory exploration.
I started by setting out a sheet of black construction paper and a race car for each child. Then I put some tempura paint(affiliate link) on a tray to share. The kids immediately began rolling the cars in the paint.
Making car tracks on the paper was really fun. There were giggles and car noises throughout the project.
At some point, the cars were discarded and this became more of a sensory activity. The kids rubbed their arms and elbows in the paint and applied it like lotion. Once they were all done, they washed off the cars (and themselves) in the sink.
Next time, I’ll try using separate trays of paint for each color, or choose specific combinations of colors to explore color mixing. I hope you enjoy!
